Whether you are concerned about the future of the country, your children, the economy, health care, or having conversations with friends/family, there is a good chance you are struggling with some form of post-election stress.
Post-Election Stress Disorder is a very real thing, especially these days. It doesn’t seem to matter which side of the fence you are on, tensions and anxiety are at an all-time high. Whether you are concerned about the future of the country, your children, the economy, health care, or having conversations with friends/family, there is a good chance you are struggling with some form of post-election stress. Add to that the uncertainty of a global pandemic, and it just might feel like your plate is overflowing.
You and your family’s mental health is important, so what can you do to combat post-election stress and breathe a little easier in the face of uncertainty?
Maybe you voted, campaigned, or put a sign in your yard, whatever it is that you did to try to influence the election is done. You did your part. You did all that you could, and if you didn't--forgive yourself. Now, you might be feeling disappointed at the results or overwhelmed with anxiety over what this means for the future, and all of this is normal. Unfortunately, the result is out of your control so now you must work towards acceptance in yourself so that you can move forward with calmness and content. Accept what you cannot control. Practice self-care. Take time to reconnect with yourself and who you are.
If you are struggling with how to do that consider seeking help from a licensed mental health professional. At CW Psychological Services our counselors are trained in stress-management, anxiety, and depression, among other things, and we can help you on your path to acceptance.
Now is also a great time to put whatever energy you are feeling towards the things you can control. Maybe you can't control who is in power but you can still work towards making a difference in the issues you feel strongly about. Advocate for the things you are passionate about, make strides to help others--however small, any help is good help.
